Risk Assesments
In order to carry out the filming process safely and efficiently, as part of the planning process prior to filming we produced risk assessments for each location. Below I have inserted the risk assessments for filming in the forest location and the drama studio, the two most hazardous locations for filming. By carrying out the risk assessments we minimize the risk of potential incidents occurring and allow us to take the necessary precautions.
First Draft Feedback
We presented the first draft to the class and got them to mark the video in the same format that the examiner would when moderating the work. From this we found some things that we can work on....
Main Points of Concern:
Unsteady camera work was the main cause for concern as people said it made the video lose quality because its looked cheap and untidy. To alter this we will make sure that when we go to re film the unsteady part we take more care in filming. Failing this we will play around with the stabilize effect to try and smooth over some of the camera work however the stabilize effect doesn't always work as well as we hope so this will have to be something that we look in.
Another problem we had was some of the lip syncing, this was something we identified when we exported the video however lip syncing bits up is a simple process that with some time and effort will be able to change. I will make sure for the 2nd/final draft that all the lip syncing is as close to perfect as possible.
Average mark:
29 out of 40 (a score we were pleased with but want to considerably improve on)

1st draft
After collating all of our shots so far, we finally have the groundwork of our finished music video and below I have inserted our first draft. Although it is initial it is similar to what we want the final video to look like. We are going to present the video to the class in order to build up some feedback and peoples ideas to how we can improve the video for the final edit.
Photoshoot #2
Today we conducted our second photo shoot. We decided that the images that we first produced did not look professional enough and looked a tad amateurish. We therefor decided to hold a second photo shoot, wearing the same sort of outfit that we planned previously (can be seen in live performance outfit plan post). These photos could be used throughout our final constructions such as the website and the digi-pack, the shots could also be linked more closely with the final video as we are wearing the same costumes and using similar lighting, improving mise en scene continuity throughout the construction process.
Below I have inserted the photos that were taken during the shoot:
Below I have inserted the photos that were taken during the shoot:
Costumes for our live Performance
For the performance part of our video we have had to plan exactly what costumes we are going to be wearing during the performance.
For me it will be a simple plain white T shirt, with a Checked pattern shirt over the top. This will be accompanied with jeans and plain white trainers. here we have tried to incorporate the simple crisp look we have wanted to create with the Encoded trademark however the checkered shirt still allows us to keep in touch with our 'indie' roots.
My Costume plan
We are trying to achieve an almost identical theme for max, except he will be wearing a simple short sleeved plain white shirt. He will also be wearing jeans, this allows us to look very similar and complete the encoded look but still gives each of us our own costume identity.
Encoded Live Show/ Performance video plan
Below I have inserted the plan for our live performance part of our video, we have taken inspiration from groups such as Mumford and sons (the fairy light idea) as well as looked to challenge the conventions of stereotypical 'indie' bands by including stage visuals such as confetti. The idea is relatively simple and crisp but I believe it will be extremely effective and professional once completed.
Prop list requires for the shoot:
-artist outfits ( to be decided)
- Encoded back drop
- Lights x 3
- Confetti
- 2 x Leaf blowers
- 2 x Black Sheets
- Guitar
- 2 Mic stands and Mics
- potentially drums subject to group decision.
Halfway presentation feedback
After presenting our slideshow at the halfway point of our project we produced a questionnaire type table for people to answer in order to gather peoples opinions on where the group was at currently. This allowed us to gain some critical points that could help us to improve the video and project in future. Below I have inserted a sample of the feedback that we received.
Halfway Presentaion
Here we have the presentation that we delivered to the class at the half way stage of our project. Please only watch from 00:00 to 6:34 as this video also contains the other presentations from the class.

What do record labels look for when signing new artists?
Talent:Major record labels spend millions looking and scouting for new artists and they only take on the very best artists so they do not waste there money. They also want to insure themselves by only singing people who appeal to large audiences.
Product:As a band trying to break through into the industry will try and spend to much making a very high end video. By using equipment like a non-expensive microphone, a compressor , a pre amp, some basic software and any form of computer a song could easily be made and shared. Saving money this way is vital for a new and struggling artist and defiantly something to remember for bands as we try to break into the industry.
Placement:As we have created our product we now need to concentrate on getting it noticed. To secure a large fan base we will be posting our song on Soundcloud, Youtube, BandCamp and Ourstage. Also we will focus on keeping our social media up to date.
Promotion:We will almost entirely rely on social media to promote our song. We are going to use this as because our band is just starting social media is a free way to reach potentially millions of people.

Permission Letter to use Song
We sent this letter to Atlantic records in order to get permission to use the song 'Call me Ishmael' by Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, as the soundtrack for our music video for our band Encoded. This was to avoid any potential complications at a later date involving copyright.
Digipack Research and plan
During the construction of our digipack we undertook a lot of research to gather ideas and inspiration for our own. During this process we examined packs from both modern day artists as well as those from years gone by. We liked the aesthetics of many of the older covers including the one we used for our main source of inspiration, that of 'Ballyhoo- the best of Echo & The Bunnymen, which can be seen below.
We used this as a template and inspiration for our digipack and as you can see the Encoded digipack puts a modern unique spin on this design as well as showing key similarities such as the open space pictures of the clouds in our digipack, and the setting sun in that of the Ballyhoo's.
Below is the concept construction we designed from our research. It allowed us to create a physical copy of ideas and gave us a basis to work from when designing our actual digital copy.

Shooting Schedule
Below is the shooting schedule for our group. The schedule clearly states the date, what scene were going to shoot, whether its inside or outside, shot number, the location, characters and the props and special equipment required for the shot. This is a document that we can refer back to regularly if we are unsure when we are scheduled to be filming.
Evidence of Filming
So far we have filmed the majority of what we planned to film. This has included as follows:
Shoot 1
Our first stage of filming involved us taking so concept close up shots of the two band members faces. We shot this footage at a location at the back of the stage in school which contains a dark bricked walk way which allowed us to take some very detailed conceptual moving light shots using spotlights and the dark location. They were all close up shots involving lip syncing and looked very striking.
Shoot 2
The second stage of filming which was perceived to the main part of our music video was the live performance shoot. This took place in the drams studio at school, but as you can see from previous post due to large amounts of planning under went a transformation to become 'Encoded's live set'. This involved the construction of a back drop which can be seen during our production diary, and in full use below. During this shoot we took a much wider variety of shots, from close ups to tracking shots, to medium long shots and low angles. This covered a large variety of angles across the stage and studio. Using access above and around the sides of the stage also helped considerably as we were able to get high angle shots to accompany the point of view shots. Below you can see how we went about setting up the studio as well as filming.
Shoot 3
Shoot number 3 for us involved filming at the lo action of Richards house and the road outside. We chose this location to film some more close up and concept shots as the lighting was almost perfect and the road out the front of the location was perfectly catered for some natural shots of the group interacting and showing a natural side to the group away from the performance location. These were mainly close up lip syncing shots using lighting set ups, however did also include some wide angle shots of open spaces.
Shoot 4
Shoot number 4 took us to Galleywood common, an area of woodland close to school for our final piece of filming. By shooting at this location it aloud us to get some outdoors shots to contrast that of the live performance and other dark indoor shots we had already recorded. What attracted us most to the location was the light at the time of filming was extremely good and clear. Also the versatility of the location aloud us to gather many different types of shot which allowed us to display our various filming skills throughout this part of the video.

Weather Forecast for shoot number 4
As our fourth shoot was conducted at an outside location, the weather was something that we had to carefully take into consideration when planning which day we were going to go out and film. For one of the shots we planned on getting the sun coming through over the artists shoulder to creating an interesting natural light effect. We therefore required an early morning shoot as the sun was rising in clear sky conditions.
We therefore decided looking at the week we had scheduled to film, early on Saturday morning would give us the best chance of capturing the desired shot. As well as the forecast sunny conditions, the early morning rain would help to aid the shimmering light affect due to the water that would still be left around on the trees and other forest plants. This is something that could work to our advantage.

Pete Fraser Talk
Today we attended a talk with established teacher and media guru Pete Fraser. This was an extremely interesting and helpful experience, in which he talked a lot about the industry and drew on his experience as a teacher in order to advise us the best ways in which to achieve the highest grades possible in our coursework. He showed us ways in which not to be to cliche and to challenge stereotypes, as well as advising us not to use too well known a song during our project as the examiner would be constantly comparing us to the original production.
Storyboard
After much discussion, debating and planning we have come up with an initial idea for our music video. We have produced a storyboard for the video idea which is displayed below. The initial idea centers around the two band members and their day and preparation in the run up to a Live show or performance based ending to the video. This idea will allow us to be very flexible with editing and shooting schedules as it does not require lots of travel and can be filmed in and around the groups availability. The storyboard below outline the initial plan and sequence of events how they are going to occur in order during the video.

Narrated Storyboard
As a continuation of the basic photo based storyboard that can be seen earlier on in the blog, we have produced a moving narrated story board to help us and the viewer create more of a visual interpretation into what we want the desired final music video to look like. This can be viewed above.
Magazine Article
Below I have inserted I final completed NME Radar article for Encoded, the magazine NME radar looks to promote up and coming bands and artists and to introduce them into the mainstream view as artist, which is perfect for promoting are new act...
Stealomatic
Here we have created a Steal-omatic for our chosen song 'Call me Ishmael', the video is a moving mood board which displays influences for each of the planned stages of our storyboard from current and established music videos. The video plays to our track and includes artists such as Royal Blood and One direction in the Stealomatic.
Magazine Article Research and Planning
We recently undertook a magazine article for the magazine NME Radar, this magazine focuses on young up and coming artists (such as ourselves) we thought that this would be the most suitable location to promote our band as it is somewhere larger more established organisations may look to pick up talent.
We plan to create the magazine article in the same format as the Radar magazine, complete with the NME logos, but follow the unique design of our own style when it comes to the color and font schemes of the article. This was apparent in the articles of the bands that inspire us and there own articles. As in the two examples I have displayed below, the two bands (Arctic Monkeys and The Killers) almost take over the front cover and article with there own theme, yet still very clearly displaying the magazine company, which is something that we tried to replicate in our own work.

Photo Shoot #1
Today we carried out our first group photo shoot. We tried to take a variety of shots from different angles including low angles and medium long shots. We also played with various lighting displays, as you can see multiple color have been used to try and show of different angles of our faces and to achieve different mood feelings.
Potential Filming obstacles
During our latest team meeting we deliberated on some potential obstacles we could encounter during our first phase of filming. By identifying these potential obstacles we could anticipate and plan for them to eliminate any threat to the filming process. This is the result of our discussion:
